“The sweet psalmist of Israel” (2 Samuel 23:1)
Among all the saints recorded in the Old Testament, David’s history and contributions may be the most useful to Christians. Millions of saints have learned from David’s beautiful Psalms, and been warned by the terrible consequences of his sins. The man after God’s own heart demonstrated you can always restore your relationship with God if you repent.
Learn to pray the Psalms with the same heart David wrote them.
If you need to repent: “Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions” (Psalms 51:1-3).
If you want to assure yourself God’s in control: “O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up … You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it” (Psalms 139:1-6).
If you want to draw nearer to God: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalms 139:23-24).
If you need Gods help: “You are my God; Save Your servant who trusts in You! Be merciful to me, O Lord, For I cry to You all day long …For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You” (Psalms 86:2-5).
