“And they fortified Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall” (Nehemiah 3:8)

Ancient Jerusalem had wide walls on which soldiers could quickly run to defend against enemy attacks. The New Jerusalem should also be surrounded and preserved by a broad wall of nonconformity to the world, away from the prevailing customs. The god of this world, Satan, has infiltrated many Protestant denominations. “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron” (1 Timothy 4:1-2).

Many walls have been torn down, and in many churches, the distinction between the holy and the profane is largely gone. Most church-goers are not saved, and a general laxity and lethargy in spiritual things prevails. Beloved reader, this warning was given to saints: “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:4).

When Charles Spurgeon wrote this evening’s devotion, every mainline Protestant denomination still maintained Biblical standards. Today, most of those denominations have been taken over by Satan. If you belong to a Bible-based Church, thank God, and fight for the Kingdom of God!
