“The sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day” (Genesis 3:8)

Dear saint, now, in the cool of the day, slow down and stop, and hear the voice of your God. He’s always ready to speak with you when you’re willing to hear. If there’s any hindrance to communion with Christ, it’s not on His part. He stands at the door and knocks, and if His people will open, He rejoices to enter.

But what is the state of my heart, which is my Lord's garden? I hope it’s well tended and watered, bringing forth fruit for Him. If not, I know He’ll correct me, but I know, this is what I need, for He’s the only One who can improve my heart. Come Lord, my soul invites You earnestly, and waits for You eagerly. Come to me, and plant fresh flowers in my garden, such as I see in Your matchless character! Come, deal with me in Your tenderness and wisdom! Come, Holy Spirit, and saturate my whole nature, as the herbs are moistened with the evening dew.

Oh, that You would speak to me, for I’m listening. I’m ready to give you my whole heart, soul, strength, and mind (Luke 10:27), and hush every thought contrary to Your will. I’m sure You’ll have fellowship with me, because You asked the Father to send the Holy Spirit to dwell in me forever ( John 14:16).

Sweet is the cool twilight, and the cool wind is as the breath of celestial love. My Father, my Elder, my Brother, my sweet Comforter, speak now in lovingkindness, for “my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me. Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me” (Psalms 131:1-2).
