“The Lord has done great things for us, And we are glad” (Psalms 126:3)
If you’ve been saved long, you should be able to fill a couple of pages with all the things God’s done for you.
Some Christians look on the dark side of everything, and dwell on what they’ve suffered, instead of what God’s done for them. Ask for their impression of the Christian life, and they’ll describe their continual conflicts, their deep afflictions, their sad adversities, and the sinfulness of their hearts, without any mention of the mercy and help God’s given them.
But a Christian whose soul is in a healthy state, will not hesitate to testify, “God heard my cry and brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps and put a new song in my mouth - Praise God, the Lord’s done great things for me, and I’m so glad, I can’t contain it" (Psalms 40:1-3).
This kind of testimony is the best any saint can give. It’s true, we must endure trials, but it’s also true, God helps us get through them. It’s true, we have remaining corruptions that make us stumble, but it’s also true Christ is our all-sufficient Savior, who overcomes our corruptions, and sets us free from addictions.
In looking back, it would be wrong to say our trials weren’t difficult, but it’s also wrong to not testify that God enabled us to come through them better than ever. The deeper our troubles, the louder our thanks should be. So when you’re tempted to look on the dark side, say, “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness” (Isaiah 61:9).
