“The evening and the morning were the first day” (Genesis 1:5)

From the beginning of time, God ordained the changes from day to night. If we can get used to the changes from day to night, is it any wonder that God requires that we deal with changes in our circumstances, from the sunshine of prosperity to the midnight of adversity, from the prospects of youth to the limitations of old age? Your path won’t be always bathed in light…you must expect times when you’ll seek Christ in the night.

You’re not alone in this. All the saints throughout history have had to sing songs of judgment along with songs of mercy, songs of trials along with songs of deliverance, songs of mourning along with songs of delight. It’s according to Divine providence, that day and night shall not cease, either in the spiritual or natural realm, till we reach the land of which it’s written, "there is no night there" (Revelation 22:5). In all this, we know by faith, whatever our heavenly Father ordains, is wise and good.

What’s the logical way to deal with this reality? Learn to be content with the divine order, and be willing, like Job, to receive evil from the hand of the Lord as well as good. Learn also, to make the goings of the morning and the comings of the evening a reason to rejoice. Praise the Lord for the sun when it rises, and the night when it falls. “The heavens declare the glory of God … Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard” (Psalms 19:1-3). As His highest creation, we should also sing to the Lord at all times.

Trust that night is as useful as day. The dews of grace fall heavily in the night of sorrow. The stars of promise shine gloriously amid the darkness of grief. Continue your service to God in all He ordains for you. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

My soul, thine evening of old age and death is drawing near, dread it not, for it is part of the day; and the Lord has said, "I will cover him all the day long".
