“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:4)

What happened on the day of Pentecost was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophesy: “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them” (Ezekiel 36:26). Christ had promised his disciples, “the Spirit of truth … He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:17). The Apostle Peter said it was Christ, who, “being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear" (Acts 2:30).

The consequences of this sacred filling is impossible to overestimate. Life, comfort, light, purity, power, peace; and many other blessings are inseparable from the Holy Spirit's presence within the saint. As sacred oil, He anoints the saint as a priest, giving him the grace to execute his office (1 Peter 2:5). As purifying water, He cleanses the saint from the power of sin and sanctifies him for holiness, working in him to will and to do of the Lord's good pleasure (Philippians 2:13). As illuminating light, He exposes the saint’s Old Man and helps the New Man, guiding him in the way of righteousness (Romans 8:14).

As refining fire, He both purges the Old Nature of impurities, and lights a fire in the New Nature. He’s the sacrificial flame by which the saint is enabled to offer himself as a living sacrifice to God (Romans 12:1). As heavenly dew, He awakens the saint from lethargy and renews his resolve every morning. As the dove, He descends upon the saint as He did upon the Lord at the Jordan River, and bears witness to the saint’s sonship by causing him to cry “Abba, Father” (Galatians 4:6).

As the Comforter, He dispels the cares and doubts which mar the peace of the saint (John 14:26). As the wind, He brings the breath of life to men; blowing where He pleases, making helpless sinners into victorious saints (John 3:7). “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit” (Romans 8:1).
