“The dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot” (Genesis 8:9)

Noah’s ark is identified by theologians as a type and shadow of the salvation offered by Christ. Just as the dove flew over the water looking for a place to rest, and had to return to the ark, so the saint who vainly looks for peace in the world, must return to Christ. It’s impossible to find rest apart from Him. If you think otherwise, your religion is in vain. Are you satisfied with anything short of a conscious knowledge of your union with Christ? If so, you are to be pitied. If you profess to be a Christian, but find satisfaction in worldly pleasures and pursuits, your religion is false.

One of the best evidences of being saved, is the saint would never be content apart from Christ. Even if he knew he could indulge in every sin without fear of punishment, and gain the whole world, and live in it for ever, he’d never be content until he returned to Christ. Saints crave God more than worldly pleasures. That’s why the Apostle John confidently said, “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life - is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:15-17). For more on this subject, click here.

If your soul has no rest in sin, and you crave something better, Christ hasn’t forgotten you, and you haven’t completely forgotten Him. The believer can’t do without his Lord. When you feed on Him, your soul can sing, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle's” (Psalms 103:2-5).
