“Then Israel sang this song: ‘Spring up, O well! All of you sing to it’” (Numbers 21:17)
During their pilgrimage in the Wilderness, God miraculously provided water to Israel by having Moses speak to a rock, or tap a rock with his rod to obtain water, but this time, Moses had the seventy Elders use their rods to dig down to get the water to flow.
When God first saved you, He gave you the indwelling Holy Spirit who produces Living Water (John 7:37-39), but now, perhaps, the Water doesn’t flow as it should. When you were first born again, the love of God was poured out in your heart by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5), but now, perhaps, the love doesn’t flow as you’d like. The problem isn’t from God. You have a choice.
The Water is still there ... all you have to do, is dig. Don’t just live on the memory of how things used to be. Reading the Word of God is the primary way the Holy Spirit reveals Christ to you, and reading the Word feeds you, washes you, and helps you see the corruption that God wants to remove (Ephesians 3:18-19, Ephesians 5:25, Hebrews 4:12-13).
This evening, start the habit of reading Scripture as if your Life depends on it...because it does.
Just as the seventy Elders had to dig with their rods, because they had nothing better to dig with, you might have to start digging with poor reading skills. If you’re not used to reading, just read 5 minutes a day. If you read Scripture 5 minutes a day, for six weeks, you’ll develop a lifetime habit.
Every means of grace is important. Going to church, listening to sermons and eating the Lord’s Supper are all important, but reading Scripture is the primary way God feeds, washes, corrects and directs you. You decide how much grace you want. Reading the Word of God is an amazing grace over which you have personal control.
