“If they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?" (Luke 23:31)
In His final moments on Earth, Christ pushed through His pain long enough to reason with sinners to repent. If God was willing to allow evil men to torture the innocent Lamb of God, what mercy could an unrepentant sinner expect? Oh sinner, just as Christ was led to His death, so shall you be dragged to a place appointed for you. Jesus was deserted by His Father; and if He, who was made sin for us, was deserted, how much more shall you be deserted by God. “Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? … It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:28-31).
When you cry "Oh God! Oh God! rescue me!", the answer will come back, "because you didn’t obey My Word, or respond to My correction, I will not help you". If God spared not His own Son, how much less will He spare you! You’ll have an eternity to remember the thousands of lost times you ignored God’s grace. You rich, merry, self-righteous sinners - who will defend you when God says, "Awake, O sword, against the man that rejected Me. If I was willing to smite my Son, how much more this sinner who despised His sacrifice?"
Jesus was spit upon: sinner, what shame will be yours! We cannot sum up in one word all the mass of sorrows which were poured on Christ who died for us, therefore it’s impossible to know what oceans of grief will roll over your spirit if you die without Christ. By the agonies of Christ, by His wounds and by His blood, do not bring upon yourselves the wrath to come! Trust in the Son of God, before it’s too late!
