“You shall not be afraid of the terror by night” (Psalms 91:5)
This Scripture says saint shouldn’t be afraid. Why would we? God is always with us, even in the lonely hours; He’s a sleepless Guardian, a faithful Friend. Nothing can happen without His allowing it, for even Hell itself is under His control. “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into Heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Hell, behold, You are there … Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me… The darkness and the light are both alike to You” (Psalms 139:7-12).
Worldlings should be afraid, for they have an angry God above them, a guilty conscience within them, and a yawning Hell beneath them; but saints who rest in Christ are saved from all these through His mercy. If we give way to foolish fear we deny our faith, and can lead others to doubt the reality of how God has changed our lives. We ought to be afraid of being afraid, lest we grieve the Holy Spirit with a lack of faith. “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world - our faith” (1 John 5:4). “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:6).
So take charge of your dismal forebodings and groundless apprehensions, God hasn’t forgotten to be gracious, nor shut up His tender mercies, it may be a dark night in the soul, but there’s no reason to panic, for the love of God never stops. Children of light may walk in darkness, but they’re not therefore cast away, no, they’re enabled to prove their adoption by trusting in their heavenly Father.
"Though the night be dark and dreary, Darkness cannot hide from Thee;
Thou art He, who, never weary, Watchest where Thy people be."
