“The love of Christ which passes knowledge” (Ephesians 3:19)
The love of Christ is beyond human comprehension. Because Christ is the Alpha and Omega, His love has no beginning and no end. Because Christ never changes, His love is constant and reliable. Because Christ is everywhere in time and space, His love is already where you’re going to be in every stage of life (and death), for eternity. The saint who knows Christ’s love has a limited understanding of it, but Christ’s love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8).
Christ’s love is constant and unchanging because He is God, but saints don’t have perfect knowledge, so they have to make up the deficit with faith. For example, we must add faith to our love in order to “believe all things, hope all things” (1 Corinthians 13:7), and perfect love cast out fear only to the extent that faith informs us, we’ll not be judged for sin (1 John 4:18). This is the reason great faith enables great love, and great love enables great faith (Galatians 5:6). But always remember, any faith and love you possess comes from God, because of what Christ did for you.
Christ’s love for you is immeasurable, beyond your comprehension. In order to fully appreciate His love, you would have to know what he left behind in Heaven, and how He was humiliated on Earth for you. When He was enthroned in the highest heavens as God, all the hosts obeyed Him without question. You would have to know how low He descended for you. You understand what it is to be human, but He suffered unparalleled agony, and especially the loss of intimate union with His Father, something no one but Christ could possibly understand. This is love that passes knowledge. Oh, let this love fill our hearts with gratitude, and inspire us to faith working through love.
“God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10).
