“Why are we sitting here until we die?” (2 Kings 7:3)

If you’re not sure God has regenerated your heart and filled you with the Holy Spirit, you can identify with the lepers in the Book of 2nd Kings. They knew if they didn’t do something radical, they’d die of hunger. If you remain as you are, you fear you’ll go to Hell, but if you seek God with your whole heart, the worst thing that could happen is the same thing that would have happened if you did nothing.

"Nothing ventured, nothing gained", is the old saying, and in your case, seeking God will at least placate your conscience. But if you’re going to do it, do it with your whole heart. The Bible always equates the whole heart with sincerity and saving faith. There are many kinds of faith that don’t accompany salvation (James 2:19). Whatever faith you have will be useful in seeking God only if it’s sincere. If you sit and wait for Hell, no one can pity you if you end up there, but if you seek God with your whole heart and still go to Hell, if such a thing were possible, you’ll at least have done everything you know to do to avoid hell.

If you’re desperate, you’ll see salvation as all-or-nothing. That’s when seeking God with a whole heart makes perfect sense. When you know Hell is real, the instinct of self-preservation alone should motivate you. “You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). “Turn to Me with all your heart” (Joel 2:12). “They shall return to Me with their whole heart” (Jeremiah 24:7). “I entreated Your favor with my whole heart” (Psalms 119:58). “With my whole heart I have sought You” (Psalms 119:10). “Seek Him with the whole heart!” (Psalms 119:2).
