“Say to my soul, ‘I am your salvation’” (Psalms 35:3)

Sometimes saints need the Holy Spirit to assure them everything is going to be alright. We pray for things, and for days, weeks and months, nothing changes, and we wonder, should I keep praying? David is the best example of a saint who was promised something by God, and for no fault of his own, didn’t receive the promise for many years. Not only did David not receive the promise, he was public enemy number one, and almost killed many times because of the promise!

David didn’t ask to be anointed king. It was all God’s doing. “Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David” (1 Samuel 16:13). David “kept the faith” all the years he was a fugitive, running, hiding, just one step away from annihilation. In Psalm 35, David reached the point of absolute desperation. In Psalm 34, he wrote, “the Angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him”, but in Psalm 35, he asks for a visible sign of that protection. He prays, “Let the Angel of the LORD chase them”. Sometimes, trusting God is in control gives way to begging God for a visible sign of His protection.

Just because you have doubts, it doesn’t mean you’ve lost your salvation. Psalm 35 shows that David wasn’t content with doubts and fears, because he begs God for assurance. The reason he begs for assurance, is he valued his relationship with God more than any earthly thing. You must regularly be alone with God to maintain a clear sense of His love. David wasn’t satisfied unless his assurance came directly from God. He asked for nothing less than a divine testimony, "Say unto my soul, I am thy salvation”.

“Oh Lord, please let me have a definite, personal, infallible, indisputable sense that I am Yours and You are mine”.
