“I will cause showers to come down in their season; there shall be showers of blessing” (Ezekiel 34:26-27)

The nation of Israel had broken the covenant with God, and was exiled to Babylon. Their temple was destroyed and they wondered if they would ever see Jerusalem again. More importantly, they wondered if God had abandoned them forever. God sent the Prophet Ezekiel to give them hope. He promised the restoration of blessings in the future ... the same conditional blessings promised by Moses in the desert 700 years before: “'If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments, and perform them, then I will give you rain in its season, the land shall yield its produce, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit” (Leviticus 26:3-4).

Modern Christians like to quote Isaiah 55:10-11: “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it”. The Word refers to curses as well as blessings.

God waits to bless His people when they return to Him. What can you do without grace? You can sow seed, and work the ground, but without the blessing of God, nothing will grow. What is your season this morning? Are you dry because you’ve rebelled against your God? His Word tells you He wants to bless you. “‘Return to Me, and I will return to you,’ Says the Lord of hosts” (Malachi 3:7).
