“He Himself has said” (Hebrews 13:5)
If, you could only grasp the significance of these words! It’s the premier offensive and defensive weapon of the saint. It’s the “shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one” (Ephesians 6:16). It’s the Belt of Truth you keep around your waist. It’s the Helmet of Salvation that protects your thoughts and feelings. It’s the weapon you wield against all enemies, the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God ...sharper than any two-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12).
Whatever comes, distresses of life, pangs of death, corruptions within, snares without, trials from above, temptations from beneath, all can be considered as light afflictions when you trust God by trusting what "He Himself has said". This is why it’s essential for saints to know the Scriptures. There’s a promise in the Word which will exactly fit your case if you’ll just look. What comfort you miss and what opportunities you squander without the Sword of the Spirit!
You’re like a prisoner in a dungeon, and there’s a key that would unlock the door. You could be free, but as long as you don’t look for it, you remain a prisoner. You’re like a hospital patient, bedridden, waiting for a cure. The medicine sits on the nightstand, waiting for you to discover.
When you read the Bible, you store up the answers to every question and the solutions to every problem of life. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
