“God, who comforts the downcast” (2 Corinthians 7:6)

No one can comfort like the Holy Spirit. If, you’re depressed, and someone tells you a joke, after a short while, your gloom will return. If, you’re poor, and someone gives you some money, after you’ve spent it, you’ll be poor again. But if the Holy Spirit makes His abode in you, He becomes a permanent resident who bears witness with your spirit that you are child of God and a joint heir with Christ (Romans 8:15-17). There’s no greater comfort than “the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5).

The first century church walked “in the comfort of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 9:31), and so can you. When you’re tempted to despair, remember, “he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him” (1 Corinthians 6:19). The Holy Spirit within you is the Spirit of Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Might and Knowledge” (Isaiah 11:2). The Holy Spirit comforts you in many ways. He Convicts you of Sin, Teaches you the Fear of the Lord, Intercedes for you with God, Enlightens Your conscience, Guides you into all Truth, Transforms you from Glory to Glory, Empowers you to do God’s Will and Gives you the Assurance of Salvation.

To the extent you yield to His influence, you’ll produce a bountiful harvest with lasting results: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). If, you feel dry, Go to the Living Water Christ promised to those who believe in Him: “‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive” (John 7:37-39).
