“I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord And the praises of the Lord, According to all that the Lord has bestowed on us” (Isaiah 63:7)
The word “lovingkindnesses” here is from the Hebrew word “checed”, which means “unconditional love” in the context of this amazing Scripture: “In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the Angel of His Presence saved them; In His love and in His pity He redeemed them” (Isaiah 63:8-9). Yes, Christ’s unconditional love is in the Old Testament, but the most amazing thing for saints is, Christ said unconditional love goes both ways. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37).
Only supernatural regeneration of the heart and the indwelling Holy Spirit can conquer the tyranny of self-love. “God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him” (1 John 4:16). Unconditional love “suffers long ... does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
Unconditional love can come only from God. “It is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For they are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:8). Unconditional love for God is not based on present circumstances, but what Christ did for you on the cross. God will always, in every circumstance, be worthy of your unconditional Love. So “rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
