“I sought Him, but I did not find Him” (Song of Solomon 3:1)
Tell me where you lost the sense of “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17) and I’ll tell you where you left Christ. Did you gradually lose interest in devotions and finally stop them altogether? There’s the most likely place you should seek and find Christ. Did you lose Christ in sin? In order to find Him, you’ll have to “put away evil from your flesh” (Ecclesiastes 11:10), and seek the help of the Holy Spirit to
“present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness” (Romans 6:19)
Did you lose Christ by slacking off your reading of the Bible? You must find Christ in the Scriptures. It’s a true saying, "Look for a thing where you dropped it, because it’s still there". So look for Christ where you lost Him, for He hasn’t gone away. But it’s hard work to get back to Christ. The further you strayed from the path, the more difficult it will be to get back to Him.
Be careful then, once you find your Master, that you earnestly cling to Him.
But why did you depart from Him in the first place? One would have thought you would never have parted with such a precious Friend, whose presence is so sweet, whose words are so comforting, and whose company is so dear to you! Why didn’t you watch Him every moment for fear of losing sight of Him? But this is past. Now you can be thankful that he’s giving you the grace to find Him again, even though you may suffer for a time and learn not to take Him for granted.
So seek Him, for it’s dangerous to be without your Lord. Without Christ you’re like a sheep without its shepherd; like a tree without water at its roots; like a leaf in a storm—not bound to the Tree of Life. With your whole heart seek Him, and He will let you find Him. “The Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you” (1 Chronicles 28:9).
