“And God saw the light” (Genesis 1:4)

This evening we continue our discussion of the significance of light. “Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:3-4).

God saw the light, that it was good. If, the Lord has given you light, it’s dear to Him as His own handiwork and because it’s like Himself. Christ told us, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of Life" (John 8:12). Sometimes we can’t see the light, but God always sees the light, and that’s much better for us than our seeing it. It’s better for me that the Judge sees my innocence than for me to see it. It’s the greatest comfort to know I belong to God, but whether I know it or not, if the Lord knows it, I’m safe.

“The solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: ‘The Lord knows those who are His’” (2 Timothy 2:19). You may groan over remaining sin and mourn over recurring darkness, but the Lord sees "light" in your heart, for He put it there, and all the worry and doubt of your soul can’t conceal your light from His eye. You may have sunk low in despondency, and even despair; but if your soul has any longing towards Christ, and if you’re seeking to rest in His finished work, God sees the "light". He not only sees it, but preserves it in you (Psalms 31:23).

This reminder is important to saints who despite being careful to take every thought captive, begin to feel their thoughts wander. The light preserved by God’s grace, will not leave, but grow into the brightness of God’s glory (Isaiah 62:1). The light placed by God inside you is the dawn of the eternal day. “The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it” (Revelation 21:23).
