“He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures” (Luke 24:45)

Christ not only expounded the Scriptures to His disciples; He also opened their understanding. Any teacher can expound to you the Scriptures, but only Christ can enable your mind to receive spiritual truth. Other teachers can reach your ear, but He instructs your heart; they deal with the outward letter, but He imparts an inward taste for the truth, by which you can perceive its flavor and spirit. 

 The most unlearned saints can become scholars in the school of grace, when Christ, by His Holy Spirit, unfolds the mysteries of the Kingdom, and grants the divine anointing by which they’re enabled to behold the invisible. No human being can begin to approach the profound, all-encompassing way our Master reveals spiritual truths to the heart. Men with only soulish wisdom can’t begin to understand spiritual things, much less teach them! “The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14). 

 They know the letter of revelation, but its spirit they can’t discern; they have a veil upon their hearts which the eyes of carnal reason can’t penetrate. Such was your case before God regenerated your heart and filled you with the Holy Spirit. You were utterly blind; truth was ignored. Had it not been for the love of Christ, you would have remained in ignorance, for without His opening your understanding, you wouldn’t have understood spiritual things any more than a leopard could change his spots (Jeremiah 13:23). The School of Christ is the only place spiritual truth can be learned and acted on; other schools may teach what you should believe, but Christ alone enables you to be a doer of the Word, and not a hearer only (James 1:22). 

 “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 3:20-21).
