“He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself” (Luke 24:27)

After Christ was raised from the dead, we don’t know how many individuals He visited, but it’s possible, He accomplished more for the Kingdom of God by teaching individuals than by appearing to “over five hundred brethren at once” (1 Corinthians 15:6). In one such appearance, He joined two of His disciples on the road to Emmaus. Because they didn’t recognize Him, they were surprised He could explain how Scripture was fulfilled by recent events. Christ is never ashamed to spend time with an audience of two, or even one. If you let Him, He’ll show you how Scriptures apply to your situation, or if you’re still a sinner, Scripture can “make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15).

Although He could have given the two disciples fresh truth, He preferred to expound the Scriptures. He knew by His omniscience what was the most instructive way of teaching, and by turning at once to Moses and the prophets, He showed them the surest road to wisdom is not speculation, reasoning, or reading human books, but meditation upon the Word of God. When Christ sought to enrich others, He dug in the quarry of Holy Scripture.

He prompted His disciples to consider the best of subjects, by expounding the things concerning Himself. Here the diamond cut the diamond, and what could be more admirable? The Master of the House unlocked His own doors, conducted the guests to His table, and placed His own feast upon it. He who hid the treasure in the field Himself, guided the searchers to it. Our Lord would naturally speak on the most important topic, and that is His own Person and work. Oh, for the grace to study the Bible with Christ as both our teacher and our lesson!
