“The LORD is my portion, says my soul” (Lamentations 3:24)

The Scripture doesn’t say, “The LORD is partly my portion,” or “The LORD is within my portion”; but the LORD Himself, is the totality of our soul’s inheritance. Within Him, there is all we possess and desire. The LORD is all we need for all eternity. Not His grace merely, or His love, or His covenant, but the LORD Himself. He has chosen us for His portion, and we have chosen Him for ours.

It’s true the LORD must first choose our inheritance for us, or else we would never choose it for ourselves; but if we are really called according to the purpose of His electing love, we can sing, “Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalms 73:25-26).

The Lord is our all-sufficient portion. God fills Himself; and if God is all-sufficient in Himself, He must be all-sufficient for us. Our faith stretches her wings and mounts like an eagle into the heaven of divine love for her proper dwelling-place.

We have the right and duty to adore Him: “You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup … In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalms 16:5-11).

Let us rejoice in the Lord always; let us show to the world we are a happy and a blessed people, and inspire them to say, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you” (Zechariah 8:23).
