“The branch cannot bear fruit of itself” (John 15:4)
Christ told saints, “As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. ‘I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing’” (John 15:4-5).
False converts don’t bear lasting fruit. Some receive the Word with joy, believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. Others are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity (Luke 8:13-14). If you never bore lasting fruit, this is actually good news, because it explains why you couldn’t resist sin.
If God saves you, you’ll be dead to sin. “Our Old Man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin” (Romans 6:6-7).
If God saves you, you’ll be able to resist temptation. “God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape” (1 Corinthians 10:13).
If God saves you, you’ll keep His commandments. “He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His Word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him” (John 2:4-5).
“Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the LORD, And He will have mercy on him” (Isaiah 55:6-7).
