“Underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27)
God - the eternal God - is Himself our support at all times, and especially when we’re sinking in deep trouble. There are seasons when the Christian sinks very low in humiliation. Under a deep sense of his great sinfulness, he’s humbled before God till he almost forgets how to pray, because he feels, so unworthy of any grace. Of course, especially in times like these, he must remember nothing he’s done since God saved him, makes him any more worthy of grace.
Child of God, remember when you feel the most unworthy, God is holding you the same as when your spirits are high. Sin can drag you low, but Christ’s great atonement is always supporting you, always encouraging you, to “seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:1-3).
Your Lord experienced the lowest feelings a man can feel. Go to Him. “We do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:15-16).
Pray with David, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation” (Psalms 51:10-12).
