“In Your light we see light” (Psalms 36:9)

When God illuminates sinners, they see their sin clearly for the first time. Up to that moment, they love “darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed” (John 3:19–20). But Christ promised saints, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12). “You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.  And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them” (Ephesians 5:8-11).

Sinners are spiritually blind from birth, and can’t be honest about sin. But when God saves someone, He supernaturally gives him a new heart and the indwelling Holy Spirit, which enables him to repent quickly when he stumbles. His new heart desires to be clean with Christ more than enjoy the pleasures of sin.

“If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin … If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us” (1 John 1:6-10).
