“Renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalms 51:10)

King David, in his backslidden state, repents, and begs God to restore his spirit. This is what backsliders do when they come to their senses. Are you backslidden? This may surprise you, but most people today who think they’re backslidden, were never saved. This is actually good news for you if you never had power over sin.

Statistics show 90% of people who “make a decision for Christ” have no Biblical evidence of having known Him. “He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him” (1 John 2:4). “The children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God” (1 John 3:10).

If you’re a false-convert, you still have an opportunity to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and live a victorious life! In your deluded state, you had no power over sin, but if God saves you, you’ll experience, for the first time, the Resurrection Life of Christ. “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit … if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you” (Romans 8:1-11).

Here’s another thing that may surprise you. No saint can be renewed without a real manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s energy, similar to what he experienced when he was first saved. Restoration requires a supernatural miracle, because your flesh is the same as before.

So earnestly pray, “Lord, renew a steadfast spirit within me”, and prove your sincerity by using every means of grace. Earnestly pray; spend every free moment reading the Word; kill the lusts that separated you from Christ; avoid all temptations, do everything He asks with a sincere heart, and wait on the Lord. The restoration must proceed from Him.
