“Let us lift our hearts and hands To God in heaven” (Lamentations 3:41)
God hears humble prayer. Christ said of prayer, “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 18:14).
God hears prayers that agree with the Word of God. “On this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My Word” (Isaiah 66:2).
God hears the prayers of people who earnestly seek Him. “Pray to Me, and I will listen to you … when you search for Me with all your heart”. (Jeremiah 29:12–13).
God hears the prayers of people who abide in Him. “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you” (John 15:7).
God hears the prayers of people who keep His commandments. “Whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight” (1 John 3:22).
God hears the prayers of people who ask according to His will. “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him” (1 John 5:14–15).
The most healthy state of a Christian is to be always empty in self and constantly depending upon what God supplies; to be always poor in self and rich in Christ; weak personally, but mighty through God to do great exploits; and hence the use of prayer, because, while it adores God, it lays the creature where it should be, in the dust.
Prayer in itself, apart from the answer which it brings, is a great benefit to the Christian. An earnest saint comes from his prayer closet, rejuvenated and ready to do battle for the Lord. Prayer girds human weakness with divine strength, turns human folly into heavenly wisdom, and gives troubled mortals the peace of God.
