“He had married an Ethiopian woman” (Numbers 12:1)

Moses loved and married a black woman and people talked. It’s not clear whether the talk was based on skin color, or just the fact that she came from a different culture and  religion. It became an occasion for Moses’s brother and sister to question his leadership.  “So the anger of the LORD was aroused against them … suddenly Miriam became leprous, as white as snow” (Numbers 12:9–10). God had the final word.

In the Song of Solomon, the Shulamite woman who was married to the King, said she was black, because the sun had looked upon her. The lesson is, the Lord Jesus Christ is married to anyone from anywhere who believes on Him. “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26–28).

We are all unworthy of His love and affection. “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)” (Ephesians 2:4–5).

Knowing our guilt and unfaithfulness, we can only be astonished at His grace, and say, “most tender and faithful Husband of my soul, continue your gracious work of conforming me to Your image, till You present me to Yourself, without spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing” (Ephesians 5:27).

The Pharisee’s said, “this Man receives sinners” (Luke 15:2). Praise God, Christ not only received us, but married us!
