“(He) began to wash the disciples’ feet” (John 13:5)
Christ loves His people so much, that every day, He does the equivalent of washing our feet. “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us” (1 John 1:8–10).
When you repent and ask Him to forgive you for sin, He says, “I will, be clean”, and after He applies His blood, it’s as if you never sinned, and you can again “draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having your heart sprinkled from an evil conscience” (Hebrews 10:22).
This should happen quickly every time you sin. If it doesn’t, you’ll soon return to dead works to appease your guilty conscience. But every time you use this wonderful cleansing process, “the blood of Christ … cleanses your conscience from dead works to serve the living God” (Hebrews 9:14).
Moment-by-moment, in real time, as things happen, keeping close accounts with God, is the only way to maintain a sense of “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17).
So praise God! “We do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:15–16).
